Kitchen Table Magazine #7: The Future Issue

Contributing Editor for "Indigenous Rising" Section

"When I was asked to be contributing editor of this section, my first thought was: how do I amplify and honor other Indigenous voices and stories? Secondly, what’s the most important message that can be imparted to readers?

In recent years there has been a surge of non-Native awareness about Indigenous foods, brought about by the extraordinary effort of Native people to bring it to light. Let’s take fry bread, often the only example of Indigenous food that non-Native people can think of in my region, southwest Turtle Island, though it’s also eaten much farther north thanks to its dissemination in Indian Boarding Schools."

About the Issue:

KITCHEN TABLE #7: THE FUTURE ISSUE is a 120-page, full-color print magazine, dropping during a truly bizarre time to be alive on planet earth, as we face a wildly unknowable future. Things are so weird out there, we can’t accurately predict next week, let alone ten or twenty years down the road. And yet, here at Kitchen Table, we believe in a brighter future and see the potential for resistance and change that exists within ourselves and our communities.

So in this world where the future is so uncertain, The Future Issue serves up a feast of ideas, stories, and art to help us imagine what’s next. We’ve launched this crowdfunding campaign not just to print one of the most unique food magazines on the stands—but to support authentic, personal storytelling, amplify diverse voices, and keep independent print media alive. Join us in shaping the future—one page, one meal, and one conversation at a time.
