Produce Parties Magazine, Season 2: Squash

Spring 2024

Cowritten with Jessica Gingrich

"With millennia of intentional indigenous care and cultivation squash have become not only a staple food but also a symbol of native perseverance and ingenuity. It is with this knowledge that we revisit Gete Okosomin’s “discovery” story - which if you haven’t figured out yet is more fiction than fact. She wasn’t found after hundreds of dormant years by non-native bodies, but rather stewarded for generations by the Myammia - anglicized to Miami - nation with Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). Myammia means “downstream people,” and their ancestral land is in the Great Lakes Region."
